Torrevieja is a tourist town whose life revolves around the sea and salt. Its two huge salt flats, La Mata and Torrevieja, are surrounded by modern urbanizations.
Connected to each other, these salt flats have been declared a natural park, and from La Mata they connect directly with the sea. The salinera exploitation is as old as the Christian era, but had its time of expansion in the s. XIX. At present the salt of Torrevieja is exported to the whole world, and its annual production exceeds one million tons.
In Torrevieja, the maritime tradition keeps alive in the important activity of the fishing and commercial port, as well as in the numerous moorings offered by the Real Club Nautico Torrevieja and Marina Internacional. At the end of the Paseo Marítimo are the wharves where the ships used to travel to Cuba with salt and they brought back some popular songs, the habaneras, a tradition that encourages the crowded corals that the city celebrates every summer.

It is the most extensive beach of Torrevieja, with a length of 2,3Km
Located in the torrevieja hamlet of Torrelamata, is the Playa de la Mata, with a length of 2,300 m. and an average width that exceeds 40 m.
It is bounded to the south by the Cervera Cape and to the north by the Tower of La Mata that gives name to the hamlet.
It has a large promenade along the entire beach where you can find numerous bars and restaurants.
Behind the beach, there is a large expanse of sand dunes that make up the "Water Mill Park"
